Mahalia and her dear friend, Robert Anderson who she treated like her blood brother, were the ones that helped mold young Albertina Walker into the gospel music legend she would become. She first sang with the Robert Anderson singers and then Mahalia encouraged her to get out there on her own and start her own group which became the Caravans and Mahalia promoted them as often as she could and they became one of the best known female groups of the Golden Age of Gospel Music in the 1950s & 60s.

Mahalia singing Didn’t it Rain from the Newport Jazz was the inspiration for Elton John and Leon Russell to start writing songs for The Union, their collaboration album in 2010.

  9. Amazing! This woman shows up at a jazz festival, ministers the Gospel with her beautiful God-given singing voice, and brings the house down. Well done, Ms. Jackson; well done, good and faithful servant of the Lord! Hallelujah to the Lamb!
