By all means buy and read David Hadju’s “Lush Life: A Biography of Billy Strayhorn.” I love this man!!
huh? i dont even get this comment. where does anyone sound any way or say anything about their own or anyone’s sexuality in this clip.
where can i see the whole documentary?
Try Netflix for the whole documentary. Billy was an amazing cat. I first heard Lush Life recorded by Nat King Cole and was stunned to learn that a boy of 16 years of age had written the song. Theire was no doubt in my mind at the time that the person that wrote it would have had to be gay to have such insight and wisdom beyond his years. God seems to bless us that way so that we are able to survive.

Wrong grammar also.
I love this guy (more his music than him I guess…). His music…..exquisite, love it!!!
He is a legend indeed. I say is not was.
Unbelievable! Billy, the sole writer of Take the A Train, “received none of the song’s royalties.” That greatly diminishes my respect for Ellington the man, as much as I hate to write that.
PBS But when you get be prepared , I watched it 10 times then
watched it again emotional great music, lyrics , arrangements all rolled up into a great musical life Facor your own opinion on Ellington after seeing this !
It seems strange that A Train is the most famous and recognized Strayhorn composition, when the piece was not representative of any of his other compositions. Everybody here should check out Chelsea Bridge and Lush Life for sure, amazing pieces. I love Strayhorn, look at his little stance when he hits the last chord of A Train in that clip hahaha so great.
@moviemonk1000, I’ve checked everywhere for this documentary. I even emailed the website on PBS and they can’t get a hold of the director that owns the dvd. Do you know of another place, or someone else I can contact to watch the documentary?
I cant find this docu anywhere. Can anyone please point me in the right direction?
I can’t believe no one has uploaded it yet.. shame , such a shame..
